Thought For the Week

A simple judge of my character is how I treat people who can do absolutely nothing for me.

THE UNION

Thought for the Week
In the gospel, Jesus looks upon the “troubled and abandoned” crowd and is moved with pity. Jesus’ deep compassion is manifested in his immediate response – he “summons the twelve disciples” and sends them as ministers of his compassion, authorised to preach and heal in his name. Jesus still calls and still sends. We are summoned to the abundant harvest as his labourers. We, too, are authorised to continue his work, which is, at root, a ministry of compassion.

Compassion derives from two Latin words that mean to suffer with. Living the paschal mystery means that we are willing to suffer with the lost and strayed of God’s house so that they might rise to new life. The troubled and abandoned are all around us; we need simply open our eyes, reach out, and “suffer with” them. In this is healing and strength – for both the “lost sheep” as well as for the faithful disciple.

Thanks from Pat Kemp
“Dear Friends, I would like to thank you all for helping me celebrate my Special Birthday recently. I truly had a wonderful weekend. Having all my family and friends around me was the most precious gift I could have dreamed of. I had so many Mass cards, bouquets of flowers, chocolates, wine and gifts it was overwhelming. I am truly blessed. Once again, thank you all. God bless.” Pat Kemp.

Could you be a Magistrate?
People with common sense and personal integrity and knowledge of the local community are needed to deal with most criminal cases in local magistrates’ courts. You need to be between 27 and 65 years of age and be able to listen to all sides of an argument and contribute to fair and reasonable decisions. You don’t have to have academic or formal qualifications or previous knowledge of the law. There will always be someone on the “bench” who has been trained to guide less experienced people through its business. The time commitment is a minimum of 26 half days each year and you do have to be available for full day sittings. A rota is worked out in advance. If you want to find out more please either chat to Nicky Stavely on 023 9258 8347 or Val Gordon on 023 9249 2024.

Free to good home!!!

The Rowans Hospice, Purbrook – helping people with cancer
If you are caring, empathetic and calm and can turn your hand to one of the many tasks that need doing to keep the Rowans the tranquil, comfortable and inspirational place it is, please consider ringing to find out more from their Volunteer Co-ordinator, Pauline Wallace on 023 9223 8538. She is always looking for drivers to use their own cars, volunteers to serve meals at weekends and people who enjoy tending a beautiful garden. Support and training are on offer but as the Rowans has to raise all its own income, it is only able to offer expenses to drivers.

Snowdon Challenge
Ruth Moorhen will be speaking after all Masses this weekend in aid of the Snowdon Challenge.

Help Stop Pro-Abortion Amendments Today
The government’s Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill has received initial approval in the House of Commons and MPs have rejected attempts to reduce the time limit for some abortions. Pro-abortion MPs may now try to use the Bill as a vehicle to widen the abortion law, enabling even more abortions to take place. You can support the campaign against this by simply delivering some leaflets door-to-door in your street or locality. To order leaflets (free of charge) please contact Society for the Protection of Unborn Children, telephone: 020 7091 7091, email or write to SPUC 3 Whitacre Mews, Stannary Street, London, SE11 4AB. Some leaflets are available in the church porch.

Samaritans
