THE UNION

Thought for the Week
This solemnity celebrates two great apostles: Peter, apostle to the Jews and Paul, apostle to the Gentiles. It also celebrates the faithfulness of disciples. It celebrates the establishment of the Church. Most of all, this solemnity celebrates the victory of Christ that is shared with his faithful disciples – “the crown of righteousness awaits me.”

Repeated imprisonment did not silence Peter or Paul; both preached the good news of salvation in Christ until their final suffering and death. Both were able to do so because Christ stood by them and gave them strength. So it is for us, Christ strengthens us to preach boldly and faithfully. Such living will bring us, too, to receive the “crown of righteousness”. Faithful disciples are always rescued by God; however, divine rescue is not necessarily from pain or suffering in this life or the threat of death, but is always about being taken safely to the heavenly kingdom. This is the victory we celebrate this day.

Pauline Jubilee Year
The President of the Turkish Bishops’ Conference is hoping that those who visit the country for the Pauline Jubilee Year will come as pilgrims rather than tourists and in that way offer support to the small number of Turkish Christians. The Turkish Government allowed the Basilica of Tarsus to be re-opened for worship during this Year of St Paul. It is usually used as a museum. Turkish Christians are not officially recognised by the Turkish Government and their situation is difficult.

Book of Remembrance
If anyone would care to send their own prayer card, religious picture, poem etc. to be added to the Book of Remembrance (November), please place it into an envelope not folded and leave it in the Parish Office for collection. Closing date: end of June. Please note, no item sent in can be returned. Please mark your envelopes – ‘Garden of Remembrance’.

Hospitals and the Data Protection Act
The Patients Charter requires Hospital authorities to care for the religious and spiritual needs of their patients, while the Data Protection Act forbids those authorities to pass sensitive personal data, like religious affiliation of patients, to chaplains unless the individual patient has expressly requested this. Therefore, when parishioners are admitted to hospital they should make sure that they tell the hospital staff taking their details that they are Catholics, and express their wish that this information be passed to the Roman Catholic Chaplain. Those responsible for children or for those who are unconscious when admitted should do likewise.

Help Stop Pro-Abortion Amendments Today
The government’s Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill has received initial approval in the House of Commons and MPs have rejected attempts to reduce the time limit for some abortions. Pro-abortion MPs may now try to use the Bill as a vehicle to widen the abortion law, enabling even more abortions to take place. You can support the campaign against this by simply delivering some leaflets door-to-door in your street or locality. To order leaflets (free of charge) please contact Society for the Protection of Unborn Children, telephone: 020 7091 7091, email or write to SPUC 3 Whitacre Mews, Stannary Street, London, SE11 4AB. Some leaflets are available in the church porch.
