THE UNION

Thought for the Week
In all three parables of the kingdom, the outcome is assured: justice/judgement will come; the smallest seed will grow; yeast will leaven. This assurance is grounded in God’s “mastery over all things” (first reading). But in God’s kingdom mastery is exercised with care, justice, clemency, leniency (first reading). Herein is the Good News.
From Living Liturgy

John Hamilton RIP
“Thanks to all those who kindly made donations in memory of John. I am delighted to say that £200.00 has been sent to our Diocesan Clergy Training Fund and £200.00 to Fr Bede at the Junior Seminary in Galle, Sri Lanka. Thank you all for your generosity.” Joan Hamilton

St Nicholas Gregorian Chant Choir – Schola Gregoriana Sancti Nicolai
The St Nicholas Choir, or Schola Gregoriana Sancti Nicolai, is male voice and dedicated to singing Gregorian Chant. It formed in 2001 with the help of the late Dr Mary Berry CBE of Cambridge under the patronage of St Nicholas, patron of sailors and choristers. The choir sings Gregorian Chant monthly at Sacred Heart, Fareham and every three months at St Peter’s, Winchester. Members meet weekly at the Sacred Heart to study and practise the Chant. New members are very welcome, including complete beginners. Knowledge of Latin is not required. Everything will be explained. Please speak to one of the choir or contact Neville McNally on 023 9286 2384.

St Jude’s Jumping Jack’s Nursery
We are pleased to announce that the Nursery will be fully operational from September 2008, providing high quality child care and access to the Early Years Curriculum, for children aged two years to four years.

How times have changed!!!!
This is from a 1937 article by Fr Frawley, Parish Priest of Sacred Heart, Fareham for their “newsletter”. “Deportment in Church" – Do not greet your acquaintances in church, much less hold conversations with them there. Do not be offended if your friends, holding the church more sacred than yourself, take little or no notice of your courtesies. Do not expect the Priest to notice you, even in the rear of the church. Show no human respect whatever, in the choir, in the galleries, or in any part of the church – in regard to any of the above-mentioned matters.

Members of the choir ought to conduct themselves in the same manner. They should conform to the parts of the Mass or Service as the rest of the congregation when not actually singing – standing, sitting, kneeling, as the portion of the Service may require. As soon as they have finished singing they should take up their prayer book or beads, which they should always have with them.

Standing and holding conversation in the parts adjoining the church, such as the porch of the church and in the passages is a great abuse of the sacred edifice of God.

In passing in the immediate vicinity of the church, and especially if the doors or windows should be open, no one should raise his voice so as to be heard in the church.

In passing before the church men and boys should always raise their hats in honour of the Blessed Sacrament, whether walking or riding. This is a distinct profession of faith and non-Catholics always expect to see it in Catholics. Women should bow the head, cross themselves, or make some other act of reverence………(nothing wrong with that!)

Every Catholic who can read should familiarise himself with the parts of the Mass and with the various prayers and devotions at the same time by the constant use of a prayer book. Everyone, but especially those who cannot read, should likewise provide themselves with rosary beads. By far the most appropriate book at Mass is the one that corresponds to the Mass Book or Missal on the Altar…” (again, not a bad suggestion).

Sacred Heart Catholic Church41 Portland Street, Fareham - Update
The refurbishment works at 41 Portland Street have come to an end. The Finance Committee and Fr Joe are looking at the best ways we can utilize what few parking spaces we have. If we could continue observing the parking restrictions until further notice it would be appreciated. Parishioners have been extremely co-operative during this period, for which we are very grateful. Unfortunately, others who have nothing to do with the Church, haven’t been.

Please note that the Malayalam Mass and Catechism scheduled for 3rd August, have been cancelled.

Pilgrimage from Portchester to Southwick
The pilgrimage from Portchester to Southwick following in the footsteps of the Augustinian Canons who left Portchester in the 12th century, takes place on Sunday 27th July. If you need details or plan to take part, please ring Penny at St Mary’s Church Portchester Parish Office on 023 9232 1380 as the people at Southwick need to know how many hungry and thirsty pilgrims to cater for.

This group has provided transport for elderly Portchester residents for the last 20 years. They need a co-ordinator to join their existing team of volunteers (no driving required). If you feel you can contribute one day of your week to this very worthwhile cause, please contact Shirley Hoade on 023 9237 6475 or Jean Toone on 023 9232 1788 for further details.

Niall’s trip to World Youth Day
You will soon be able to catch up with Niall’s trip Down Under. In the meantime, here are some snippets from his time at the World Youth Day.

“We … had three hours free time before heading to the Telstra Dome for the big Commissioning Mass for World Youth Day! I was in a small group of five…….and we spent most of our time on this free tram that goes around the whole of the central business district of Melbourne. We noticed that a lot of other countries outside of the tram were singing songs……so we decided on the tram to quietly sing the hymn “As I kneel before you…and this crowd of about 40-50 Polish Pilgrims crammed onto our tram and we decided to start again, but this time to sing a little bit louder and the Polish joined in at the chorus….It just proves to the world that Catholicism and/or religion in itself is definitely not dead with the youth of today…..”

“We found our seats right in front of the altar in the middle of the stadium and found that we had a massive contingent of the pilgrims from the Republic of Ireland to my left…..I sang a bit of “Ireland’s Call” with them. In front and behind us was a group of Germans. (We were banned from trying to sing the great escape of the Dam Busters theme!!!)” …..“Our next part was jumping onto a coach going to the local National Reserve and we went kangaroo hunting…..we all got really good photos on our mobiles and cameras. Back at the church speakers were talking about what part they play in the parish…which I saw was a great art of stewardship with the people using the talents and their time because they all had full time jobs…and using their talents to help the community. We then used our talents to see what we could do…….I decided with my height and strength to help out with the local volunteer Fire Brigade for two hours.”
