Catholic Church in Fareham and Portchester Newsletter
THE UNION

Thought for the Week
The wisdom that Solomon requested and for which he is famous is one of the most valued virtues of the Old Testament tradition. Like Solomon, we must ask for wisdom so that we can recognise the great treasure of the kingdom of God when it appears.

The three parables describe different ways people find the kingdom – by chance, by diligent search, by careful discernment. No matter which way, two things are needed: first, the wisdom to recognize the surpassing worth of the kingdom when it appears; and, second, the boldness to stake all on the kingdom. Be wise! Be bold!

Catholic Children’s Society Photography Competition – theme of ‘the cross’
The Catholic Children’s Society has been in touch to ask us to remind you that if you are heading off on holiday this summer to keep in mind their Photography Competition. The Society is on the look out for interesting photographs depicting the theme of ‘the cross’ which they can print as greeting cards. It may be that you already have a possible photo tucked away in a box in the loft but perhaps there will be new opportunities when you are away on holiday this summer. The six winning entries will be printed in a series of limited edition cards which will be made available to purchase online to raise money for the Society. Entries close on 15th September 2008 so there is still plenty of time. Full details of how to apply are online at www.cathchild.org or you can email or call Ann Hoggan from the Supporter Care team: 020 8668 2181, she will be pleased to post you an application form. Good luck and happy snapping.

Entering and Leaving Church
“On entering a church where the Blessed Sacrament is kept, it is customary not to make the genuflection until one is entering the pew or arrives at the place where they intend to remain.

On leaving the church the genuflection is made at the nearest point where one is leaving the presence of the Blessed Sacrament, as at the exit of the pew, or at the altar rail, side chapel or other point of departure.

Do not make a genuflection immediately on entering or leaving the church inside the door, which is superfluous and awkward, especially when there are crowds entering or leaving.

Do not genuflect on leaving the pew when you are going to the altar but wait until you have come before the altar. In like manner do not genuflect before the pew when you have returned from the altar rail.

In crossing from one side of the church to the other, whether in the front, middle or rear of the church, a genuflection must always be made towards the altar where the Blessed Sacrament is kept or exposed.”

A Great Big Thank You…
The St Philip Howard Pre-School celebrated its 21st birthday last week with a big party! The Mayor and Mayoress of Fareham attended and so did the local newspapers (so keep an eye out). Early Years Manager, Veronica Riggs, was presented with an engraved vase for her dedicated service at the Pre-School for over 20 years. Children, parents, carers and staff all had a fantastic time and there was even a magician to add a little magic to the occasion. St Philip Howard Pre-School staff and committee would like to say a great big thank you to all those who helped make the day such a success. If any parents are interested in a place for their child at the Pre-School, please telephone Veronica on 07814 870561.

More from Niall Tuttiett at World Youth Day
“Hello from my last e-mail in Sydney Australia. Saturday started at 8.00am getting up and packing everything I needed for the 9.00am 10 kilometre pilgrimage from the other side of Sydney Harbour Bridge to Randwick racecourse….with thousands of people walking over the bridge completely closed off from traffic.........singing, chanting and chatting….Sunday we got up at 6.00am due to the lovely Italians running through everywhere as they were blowing their whistles and singing “Benedictus”….Everyone was getting excited before the Pope’s arrival as he was driven through all the walkways in his Popemobile. I got a good photo from only 10 yards away. His main message was to receive the Holy Spirit and act upon it the best way that you can! At the very end we found out the next WYD is in Madrid……..I will be 100% going and hoping a lot more young people in our parish will be going too!!!”
