Entrance Antiphons for this week
Monday - Today let us honour St Laurence, who spent himself for the poor of the Church. Thus he merited to suffer martyrdom and to ascend in joy to Jesus Christ the Lord.
Tuesday – Here is a wise and faithful virgin who went with lighted lamp to meet her Lord.
Wednesday - The Lord is my inheritance and my cup; he alone will give me my reward. The measuring line has marked a lovely place for me; my inheritance is my great delight.
Thursday – Lord, be true to your covenant, forget not the life of your poor ones for ever. Rise up, O God, and defend your cause; do not ignore the shouts of your enemies.
Friday - Come, you whom my Father blessed, says the Lord: I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of my brothers or sisters, you did for me.
Saturday - Lord, be true to your covenant, forget not the life of your poor ones for ever. Rise up, O God, and defend your cause; do not ignore the shouts of your enemies. |

From Father Joe
Most families have their own traditions. You can easily find this out by asking children how they celebrate Christmas. Some will say that they open their presents first thing on Christmas morning whilst others will tell you that they open theirs after midnight Mass on Christmas Eve. Different families do different things to celebrate the great festivals. But this also happens with the more mundane things of life. Some families have their main meal at mid-day and others have it in the evenings. This “way of doing things” happens in the Church as well. As Catholic Christians we do things in certain ways. It’s one way we confirm our identity as Catholics, as belonging to the family of the Catholic Church.
As an example, we come into church and we dip our fingers in the holy water stoop (in times outside of flu) and make the sign of the Cross. We genuflect to the tabernacle before going into the pew. We join in the responses and at times we kneel, we stand, we sit. We don’t make these traditions up as we go along but rather they are something that we have received even though they might get a little bit adapted along the way. In a way you could say it is the language we speak that communicates to us and others our faith.
Continuing on from previous week’s reflections on the liturgy and particularly the Mass this ties in with why we do things that connect us with our heritage. So at times we might sing the odd simple chant in Latin. The Church urges us to do this. In the Constitution on the Liturgy, after urging that the vernacular take a proper place in liturgical celebration, Vatican Council II adds this directive: ‘Nevertheless steps should be taken enabling the faithful to say or to sing together in Latin those parts of the Ordinary of the Mass belonging to them.’ With this intention, Popes on several recent occasions have expressed the desire that Gregorian chant in its simpler melodies accompany the eucharistic celebrations of the people of God and lend its strong support to these celebrations with its pleasing music and also that the voice of the faithful be heard in both Gregorian and vernacular singing.
So in doing this in some of our parish masses it is not an attempt to turn the clock backwards as some suggest but more a case of saving our heritage that otherwise might be lost. |

Visit the Relics of St Thèrèse of Lisieux
An all night vigil of prayer and veneration of the relics of St. Thérèse of Lisieux will take place at Portsmouth Cathedral from 10.00pm on the 16th of September to 7.00am on the 17th of September.
St. Thérèse of Lisieux is a well known and loved Saint who impacted the Church in a very deep way by her simplicity and trust in God. In her short life she showed a depth of Faith remarkable in a young person. In a long standing Catholic tradition, her relics will be honoured in our Diocese as a sign that holiness and Faith can be attainable. Holiness is within the reach of everyone.
The Vigil will take the form of meditation on the Stations of the Cross. Fr. Peter Glas representing the Solent Pastoral Area will lead the meditation on the 12th Station from 3.30am to 4.00am.
Fr Joe and Fr Pat would encourage as many of you as possible to join our Parish, our Pastoral Area and Diocese to venerate the relics of St Thérèse of Lisieux during the night of prayer (Wednesday 16th September 2009) at St John’s Cathedral. Even though our Pastoral Area has been allocated the time from 3.30am to 4.00am it is hoped that many will spend longer than the half hour allocated either before or after. A list is available at the back of the church for you to add your name to if you intend spending some time at the night vigil. Please indicate the time you plan to attend and also, if you are able to offer transport to anyone who is looking for a lift. For those who would like a lift, please add your name to the list with the request for transport. The Office will endeavour to marry the two lists together wherever possible. If it is not possible for you to go during the night please try to attend during the day. More details of the Mass with Anointing of the Sick on 16th September at 2.00pm and the Mass of Thanksgiving on the 16th at 7.30pm will be given as soon as details are made available.
