From Father Joe

Does this seem familiar? You’ve just returned home from your summer holiday, you’re on the final day of your annual leave and the last thing in the entire world that you feel like doing is going back to work the next day. You find yourself saying “what I really need is a vacation to recover from my vacation.” Perhaps part of the problem, aside from the obvious one of going completely OTT in Torremolinos, is the fact that our lives are so compartmentalised. We live one life at work, another at home, and yet another when we go away. And these lives or compartments are very different and totally unconnected. It is almost as if they were being lived by different people. At times it can go beyond the merely fragmented to being torn apart within oneself.

In a Benedictine monastery, one principle that is continually stressed, is the unity of and in all that we do, i.e. there is essentially no difference between the time we spend doing our work should that be in the kitchen garden, cleaning the toilets, or on the computer, and the time we spend in recreation and leisure, or for that matter, the time spent praying in the Abbey church.

Life today is complicated. There may be nothing we can do about that. But as we are encouraged to apply the holistic principle to health care in today’s NHS, the principle that says in treating people we must look beyond the physical symptoms and include the emotional, social, and spiritual needs of the patient as well, it might be a good idea to apply it to our individual lives. If we can see and acknowledge how the different aspects in our lives are connected, maybe we can allow them to feed and nourish each other. Happy holidays!

As the Parish Office will be closed for two weeks, you will be spared the “Thought for the Week” for a while!!

Book of Remembrance
On 1st November, the Book of Remembrance will be open again in Sacred Heart Church. If anyone would care to have a photo of a departed loved one put into the Book or maybe a special prayer, please put it in an envelope marked “Book of Remembrance” and leave it in the Parish Office. No picture or prayer can be returned.

Prayer Group Meeting
The Prayer Group meets on Thursday 10th September in Our Lady of Walsingham Church, Portchester at 7.30pm, led by Father Peter Glas. Everyone welcome to come along and pray together even if you have not attended previous meetings.

Visit the Relics of St Thèrèse of Lisieux
An all night vigil of prayer and veneration of the relics of St. Thérèse of Lisieux will take place at Portsmouth Cathedral from 10.00pm on the 16th of September to 7.00am on the 17th of September.

St. Thérèse of Lisieux is a well known and loved Saint who impacted the Church in a very deep way by her simplicity and trust in God. In her short life she showed a depth of Faith remarkable in a young person. In a long standing Catholic tradition, her relics will be honoured in our Diocese as a sign that holiness and Faith can be attainable. Holiness is within the reach of everyone.

The Vigil will take the form of meditation on the Stations of the Cross. Fr. Peter Glas representing the Solent Pastoral Area will lead the meditation on the 12th Station from 3.30am to 4.00am.

Fr Joe and Fr Pat would encourage as many of you as possible to join our Parish, our Pastoral Area and Diocese to venerate the relics of St Thérèse of Lisieux during the night of prayer (Wednesday 16th September 2009) at St John’s Cathedral. Even though our Pastoral Area has been allocated the time from 3.30am to 4.00am it is hoped that many will spend longer than the half hour allocated either before or after. A list is available at the back of the church for you to add your name to if you intend spending some time at the night vigil. Please indicate the time you plan to attend and also, if you are able to offer transport to anyone who is looking for a lift. For those who would like a lift, please add your name to the list with the request for transport. The Office will endeavour to marry the two lists together wherever possible. If it is not possible for you to go during the night please try to attend during the day. More details of the Mass with Anointing of the Sick on 16th September at 2.00pm and the Mass of Thanksgiving on the 16th at 7.30pm will be given as soon as details are made available.
