| Should we have a Parish Social Group?
A summer garden party, a cruise around the Solent, trips to the theatre, over 60’s bungee jumping (perhaps), country walks, picnics and much more. Would you like to help form a new team of parishioners to gather ideas and organise social events for members of the parish/pastoral area and their friends and families to enjoy? You will be able to devote as little or as much time as you wish so it will not become a chore. If interested, please give your name and telephone number to the Parish Office within the next two weeks and we will be in contact.

From Living Liturgy
The disciples in the gospel are a little bit like the child caught with his or her hand in the cookie jar – sheepish at getting caught, they are reduced to silence.
What contrasts this gospel presents! Jesus is speaking of dying: the disciples are speaking of greatness! The disciples were afraid to question Jesus. The disciples (and all of us) are prone to illusions of grandeur; Jesus calls us to be last of all. In face of such contrasts, perhaps the only response really is silence but not a silence of sheepish embarrassment; rather the silence necessary in face of the challenge of the cross.
In the gospel, Jesus began a journey he did not wish anyone to know about. It is as though Jesus needed uninterrupted time to teach his disciples what he is really about – giving his life for others. In sharp contrast, what is on the disciples’ mind is status – who was the greatest among them. Jesus doesn’t give up, but tries another tack: he says that a disciple must be the servant of all and then he does just that by embracing a child. Ultimately, to be the greatest is to be servant, and to be servant is to give one’s life. |
