Entrance Antiphons for this week
Monday - My words that I have put in your mouth, says the Lord, will never be absent from your lips, and your gifts will be accepted on my altar.
Tuesday – The just man will rejoice in the Lord and hope in him, and all the upright of heart will be praised.
Wednesday - This holy man fought to the death for the law of his God, never cowed by the threats of the wicked; his house was built on solid rock.
Thursday – Like a deer that longs for running streams, my soul longs for you, my God. My soul is thirsting for the living God.
Friday - The Lord is my inheritance and my cup; he alone will give me my reward. The measuring line has marked a lovely place for me; my inheritance is my great delight.
Saturday - With Christ I am nailed to the cross. I live now not with my own life, but Christ lives within me. I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and sacrificed himself for me. |

From Fr Joe
Whatever happened to time? We seem to live in the eternal now with little regard to the order of seasons aside from a brief thought as to whether or not we might need an umbrella or a jacket on a particular day. Our lives are rather more governed by what shift we work, days off, statutory holidays, and annual leave. This is especially true in the urban areas of Britain. And in some large cities in Canada and in the northern US states, one can live in an apartment building (as I once did) with a direct entrance to the subway that would take you to vast shopping malls, office complexes, even hospitals without ever once having to step outside. In fact, some people would boast of not having been outside for weeks at a time. I remember one journalist referring to the Great Outdoors as that area you had to pass through between your front door and the front door of the taxi. Add to this the fact that our supermarkets are bursting with fresh produce - strawberries, gooseberries, fresh lettuce and tomatoes - all year round; it is no wonder that we have lost contact with the rhythm of the seasons. We have become anesthetized against one of the fundamental cyclic changes in the world around us. This can have an effect on the way we view other cycles, the major cycle of life, birth, and death which is reflected in the seasons. If we fail to recognise these natural cycles around us then we will have greater difficulty in accepting the very natural changes that come into our own lives.
As we are now well into autumn, we see around us (if we care to look) everything slowing down. Days are getting shorter and shorter. It is a natural time for us to slow down as well, it is a time for reflection and taking stock. This time of year is the appropriate time for going on retreat for precisely that purpose. The diocesan clergy retreat was held this past week at Douai Abbey. Fr Pat chose to take a few days retreat before he started his holidays. Before the activity and intensity of the Christmas season (which seems to begin right after Halloween for some reason), why not make a quiet spot for yourself. It doesn’t need to be in a remote cottage in Wales, or a specifically guided retreat, but perhaps just a quiet walk to remove oneself from all the daily distractions. Even a short half hour of quiet time can do a lot to recharge batteries. |
