Catholic Church in Fareham and Portchester Newsletter

From Fr Joe

Last week I wrote about retreats and how beneficial they can be in helping us to reflect and take stock. The autumn seems to be a popular time to do this. A retreat can be undertaken in a formal setting like a convent or monastery or at a retreat centre. It can also be done in an informal way by having a few days on one’s own in a quiet place.

And then there is the Pilgrimage. I suppose a pilgrimage is a particular type of retreat but one that involves a journey – a journey to a destination that as a place is significant for us .. So people go to Lourdes and Fatima and Walsingham to be with and honour Our Lady, they walk for days along the ancient route to St James Compostella in Spain. Every year young people from all over Europe make a pilgrimage to the Great cathedral in Chartres as a living witness to the Faith. And then there is the oldest pilgrimage of them all to the Holy Land to walk in the footsteps of Our Lord.

Next Saturday a group from our pastoral area will be making a pilgrimage to the Holy Land led by Fr John Cooke. An important part of it will be to remember our various parishes and to pray for them especially at the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem.
