From Fr Pat
I spent nearly a week on retreat with a Catholic Lay Apostolate Community based in Combermere, Ontario, Canada. It was an incredible, enriching experience. The community was founded by Catherine de Hueck Doherty who was born in Russia. Catherine’s vision was immense, encompassing farming, carpentry, cooking and laundry, theology and philosophy, science, the fine arts and drama. She said “The primary work of the Apostolate is to love one another…if we implement this law of love, if we clothe it with our flesh, we shall become a light to the world.”
This was a retreat with a difference!! The community was mostly self sufficient and depended much on donations. I spent most of my time working on the farm with members of the lay community along with a number of other Priests. My past experience as a construction worker did come in handy as we were kept really busy! In the evening we would gather in the Church for the celebration of the Eucharist. The Church which was situated in the middle of a wood was appropriately called “Our Lady of the Woods” and the autumn season which displayed the beautiful different colours was truly a breathtaking spiritual experience. It made me reflect on a line written by the Jesuit poet Gerard Manley Hopkins on God’s Grandeur: “The world is charged with the grandeur of God.”
Our glory is to mirror back in loving praise to the God who made us, the beauty we glimpse in all that comes from his hand. |

From Pope Benedict
Christian Values
Pope Benedict XVI is underlining the Christian values at the heart of Europe and encouraging its people to live these values. He notes that the countries of the EU are united around the same values.
Music
The Pope reflected on the role and power of music when he recently attended a piano concert in the Vatican given by Chinese pianist Jin Ju. Pope Benedict said that music accompanies every human experience and has the power to bring the spirit toward God.
