Catholic Church in Fareham and Portchester Newsletter

From Fr Joe

The older you get the more you tend to loose the sense of “what’s hot and what’s not”. Some people (mostly those under 50) can look at a film or TV programme and say things like “Oh that’s soooo 80’s” (or 90’s). For me the only thing that can date a film is whether it’s in colour or black and white—with one exception. I was looking at a police drama the other evening and there was the obligatory car chase where one car screeched to a stop so that someone (either cop or bad guy I don’t remember which) could leap out of the car and make a frantic call--at a pay phone. Ah yes, there was a time when we all didn’t carry mobiles.

Our communication technology has changed drastically over the past couple of decades. We can now be in instant contact with almost anyone at anytime, anywhere. But does that mean we are any better at communication? I don’t think so. In some ways I think we’ve got worse. To communicate means far more than to ring someone up with a quick “hi’ya, awright?” before launching into whatever info we wish to give or get. It involves a connection between two people. A basic valuing and respect for the other. For example, how well are we able to connect with e-mails. I’ve heard that people in offices will sometimes send an e-mail to a colleague sitting in the same room rather than getting up and going over to speak to him or her personally. Communication requires listening as well as speaking. We have two ears and one mouth. It seems our Creator wanted us to use one more than the other. Communication technology is a wonderful advance and can be used to help bring us together but it can never replace the personal i.e. the person.

First Fridays
There will be no First Friday day of devotion for the month of January. We will resume on the First Friday of February 2010. A big thank you to Fr Peter Glas for all the time he has given to this monthly day of retreat in his very busy schedule.
