There will be no First Friday day of devotion for the month of January. We will resume on the First Friday of February 2010. A big thank you to Fr Peter Glas for all the time he has given to this monthly day of retreat in his very busy schedule.

Pope Urges Religious Freedom in Turkey
Pope Urges Religious Freedom in Turkey While Catholics in Turkey enjoy religious freedom, they are still awaiting civil juridical recognition. The Pope discussed relations between The Vatican and Turkey upon receiving Ambassador Kenan Gursoy in audience. The Pope also touched upon his trip to Turkey in 2006 and the country’s role in resolving conflict in the Middle East. Turkey and the Holy See established diplomatic relations almost 50 years ago and much has been achieved. However, the Pope expressed a desire to continue making the ties deeper and stronger. The Christian communities in Turkey, while a small minority, contribute to the well-being of their fellow citizens, especially through involvement in charitable activity and healthcare. According to the Holy See’s Statistical Yearbook, approximately 99% of Turkey are Muslims and Catholics are 0.04% of the population.

From Mary Ambler
“Thank you to the friends in Fareham and Portchester Parish for their prayers, Masses, cards and support during Michael’s illness and following his death. Such kindness and love was a very real comfort to him during his months of suffering and to Kate, Sophie and me. Please continue to remember Michael in your prayers.”

Portchester Voluntary Care
This group has co-ordinators who receive requests by telephone for help with transport. They then find a suitable volunteer who will provide transport and if necessary, an escort, to Health Centres, Hospitals, Dentists etc. Donations are appreciated and can be placed in an envelope provided by the driver who will return it to the treasurer. Volunteer drivers can, if they wish, claim expenses. If you feel this service might be of help to you or if you would like to volunteer to be a driver or escort, please telephone 023 9232 1788.

Hospital Stay
Should you or a member of your family be taken into hospital for a routine operation or rest care, please let us know at the Parish Office. Although you may register your details at the hospital and include your religion as Catholic, this information is not automatically relayed to the Parish. The same applies if you are taken into hospital as an emergency. A relative or friend needs to let us know. If you are moved to another ward, this is not automatically conveyed to us, and even upon inquiry at your original ward, they will not necessarily tell us to where you have been moved. If the hospital authorities fail to offer you the opportunity of spiritual support, they are contravening the NHS guidelines for the spiritual needs of patients and staff. Please also let us know when you have returned home. Visits can be arranged and Holy Communion brought to you at home, but only if we know you have been released from hospital.
