Sacred Heart Catholic Church First Fridays
There will be no First Friday day of devotion for the month of January. We will resume on the First Friday of February 2010. A big thank you to Fr Peter Glas for all the time he has given to this monthly day of retreat in his very busy schedule.

Medjugorje Pilgrimage June 2010
A ten day pilgrimage has been organised from 7th to 17th June. Father Peter Glas will be our Spiritual Director. Shared accommodation (bed, breakfast and evening meal) and coach transfers in Dubrovnik will cost 290 Euros per person. Transport to and from Gatwick and travel insurance are not included.

In an effort to keep air fares as low as possible for everyone, it has been decided once again to ask people to book and pay direct for their seats on the same British Airways flights as detailed below. Flights can be booked via the internet where cheaper fares can normally be purchased and, the earlier flights are booked, the lower the fares are likely to be.

17th June Flight BA 2883 Dubrovnik depart 14.30 arrive London Gatwick 16.20

Catholic Church in Fareham and Portchester Newsletter

From Father Joe

Although we complained about the inconvenience of the recent snow, it did have a positive effect. It actually brought people together. Father Pat and I joined people digging out cars near the church and others were providing hot drinks for those in difficulties near Fareham railway station. I am sure similar things happened throughout the area.

Despite the problems caused to us by the snow, they pale into insignificance when compared to the terrible suffering caused by the earthquake in Haiti. We pray that those people will receive all the help they need and that others will respond generously in providing it.

Parish Half-day of Prayer
A half-day of prayer called ‘Lord, teach us how to pray’ is being organised for the whole Parish for Saturday 30th January, 9.30am to noon. The event will start with Mass at St Jude’s School at 9.30am, followed by a brief talk and instruction on ways of praying that may be new to you. If you require transport or any further details, please ring Yvette on 01329 832781.

CD based Scripture Course
Learn more about the Scriptures. Finding our way around the Bible and becoming familiar with Scripture is a challenge to all Christians, but one that we should not be afraid to tackle. This six session course produced by Catholics with Catholics in mind will shed light on many of the questions you have thought of but never asked. The programme contains all the teaching and prayer input on CD together with all handouts and notes plus a leader’s manual. Each session could last 90 minutes including refreshment time. No experience is needed to run this course. The cost is £28.99 each plus £3.50 postage and packing. For further details or to make an order, please contact the Catholic Bible School on 01243 371766, or visit their website www.catholic-bible-school.org

The Pope and the Environment
Pope Benedict XVI has said that efforts to protect the environment cannot be opposed to human life and safeguarding the dignity of the person. His address for 2010 centred on the issue of respect for creation and the environment. See more on www.zenit.org.

Path to God
“A path exists for all of us. The Lord provides everyone with tailor-made signals. ... Left to ourselves we could not reach Him. The path is too much for our strength. But God has come down. He comes towards us. He has travelled the longer part of the journey. Now He invites us: come and see how much I love you. ... Let us journey towards God in all sorts of ways: along our interior path towards Him, but also along very concrete paths - the liturgy of the Church, the service of our neighbour, in whom Christ awaits us." Pope Benedict XVI
