Sacred Heart Catholic Church SALE OF FAIRTRADE GOODS
A big thank you to all parishioners who have supported us on the first weekend of the month. The time has come to stop as The Well is reducing its sales due to competition from supermarkets. This does mean that more Fairtrade goods are widely available and so many more people are helped out of poverty.

PARISH DAY
We are planning to hold an open day for the Parish on 4th July on St Philip Howard/St Jude’s Site. This will be the last occasion when we will be able to call ourselves a ‘Parish’ before the Pastoral Area becomes a single Parish in September. The day will be a wonderful opportunity for us all to gather together, rain or shine, to have fun, be entertained and celebrate what we have in the Parish of Fareham and Portchester. You will be receiving more details as the event gets closer but for now please put the date in your diary.

FROM FATHER JOE
Re St Philip Howard Hall and Car Park

I am very much aware that there have been some serious concerns about St Philip Howard Hall over the past weeks and even months. As a matter of fact these concerns have consumed my time this past week.

Much of this concern has been regarding the people from the National Rider Training, the motor cycle people and their use of our facilities. This mostly concerns the cleanliness of the hall which has come to a despicable state. However, it must be said, once a volunteer cleaner left a number of years ago the cleanliness has always been an issue with no-one taking responsibility and, to be perfectly honest, every group blaming every other group for the cleanliness of the hall.

This past week, we have had a number of meetings both with the motor cycle group, Finance and others involved with the hall, with the result that beginning this week, National Rider Training will have restricted and defined access to the hall. In fact, it should be noted that no-one has access to the hall when another scheduled group is using it.

National Rider Training has agreed to monetary compensation for the state of the hall as well as paying for a cleaner twice a week. Some have expressed a concern that others not associated with the Church should use the facilities. We have always allowed others to do so and a definite benefit of their presence on the site is security. During the time they have been here there has been a marked decrease in vandalism, largely caused by the fact of having a site empty during the hours of day during the week.

This new policy will be under review in three months time but I would like to remind everyone who uses the hall that even with a cleaner. IT IS THE USERS’ RESPONSIBILITY TO CLEAN UP AFTER THEMSELVES.

Father Joe

FROM THE TRUSTEES OF THE WELL
Since our statement that The Well bookshop and coffee shop would have to close, the practical issues surrounding closure have become clearer and it is with considerable sadness that we now announce that trading will cease on Friday 3rd September. Until then we will be making every effort to sell all our stock – books, gifts, cards and Traidcraft goods – and trust that you will continue to support The Well as you have over the past years. The future direction of The Well’s parent charity as a means of providing a visible ecumenical Christian presence in the centre of Fareham remains unclear, but once the shop has been closed the trustees will consider the financial options and seek the views of the Christian Community of Fareham as to a way forward.
