THE UNION
Thought for the Week
A big 'thank you' to all those who helped prepare last Saturday's
parish "open air" Mass in honour of the Sacred Heart. The weather
was beautiful and a good number came to join in the celebration. I was
delighted, especially as people had to battle through the traffic jams
because of the field gun trials at Collingwood. When Mass was over, everyone
stayed for a picnic on St. Jude's playing field. The day came to a fitting
conclusion with the Parish Barbecue, also on the St. Jude's field. I was
really proud of our parish because so many contributions came together.
Apart from anything else, the co-operation with St. Jude's showed that
we are a parish with a sense of purpose and a growing willingness to collaborate.
The children, who have recently celebrated First Holy
Communion at the four different Masses, all came together on this occasion.
They sang special songs as their contribution and were in a very relaxed
and happy mood, always ready to answer my questions. With the support
of their families, and schools like our own at St. Jude's, we can rest
assured that we are doing a good deal to support our children in the development
of their faith. We must do all we can to ensure that the commitment to
follow Jesus, which he describes in today's Gospel, grows in the hearts
of our children through prayer and the example of their parents and the
rest of us, who have a responsibility as well!
Through generous daily prayer, a life guided by faith,
hope and love and an unwavering commitment to the celebration of the Sunday
Eucharist, a most serious obligation for us all, we can grow in our readiness
to "following Christ's footsteps towards the cross and true life."
(From one of the scripture-related opening prayers for today.)
Office Hours
At the present time we have not found a replacement for Mary Ambler. Joan
Hamilton is very kindly helping us out on a part-time basis. I would be
grateful if office enquiries, either by phone or in person, could be made
between 09.00am and 12.00am on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday.
Please note that the office will be closed on Thursday. Emergency calls,
of course, must be made at any time.
Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament
Thanks to Mary Ambler for all her work as co-ordinator for Adoration at
the Sacred Heart. I am grateful to Lily Peach who has kindly agreed to
take Mary's place. If you would like to join those who commit themselves
each week to an hour of quiet prayer, reading or meditation before the
Lord in this way, please call Lily on 01329 825447. Please note that,
as in previous years, there will be a break in Adoration during the summer
holidays in the Sacred Heart Church and in the Church of Our Lady of Walsingham.
Adoration will end at 9.00pm on Friday the 27th of July and will begin
again on Monday the 10th of September in the Sacred Heart Church.
UCM Jumble Sale
This takes place on Saturday 14th July at St. Philip Howard Hall from
10-12 noon.
Sunday Evening Youth Club
There will shortly be a local group running archery lessons during the
Youth Club. This will be carefully supervised and be limited to about
8-10 people on a rota basis. Parents will have to complete and return
a permission slip. An extra charge of 50p will be made to help towards
the cost. Many young people have not returned a medical form and I would
ask parents to check if their son or daughter has returned a form. If
not, please pop in at the start or end of the next Youth Club to complete
a form. Extra helpers are needed due to the high numbers of young people
attending the Club and if you are able to help, say once a month, please
contact one of the priests or Paul Tomlinson (01329 282453). No previous
experience necessary. The Youth Club will close over the summer holiday.
The last session of this term will be on 22nd July. When it opens in September
it will be open to Year 7 students and above. Year 6 students will be
invited to come along again in the Summer Term of 2002.

Heart Church. Departure from St Edmund's School will be approximately
3.00 o'clock. If you would like to book a seat on the coach, please contact
the parish office
